The Mayor and Board of Aldermen for the City of Southport were recently made aware of an incident at Capital Power that resulted in the release of ash into the air. The City has been in contact with representatives from Capital Power about the incident. Capital Power informed us that they have contacted both the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) Air Quality Division and the Environmental Protection Agency about the incident. The City has also contacted DEQ.
The City will continue to communicate with Capital Power, DEQ, and other agencies about the incident.

At the monthly Mayor’s meeting this Thursday, September 28, 4:00 – 5:30 p.m. in the Fire Department Substation, 111 E. Nash Street, a representative from Capital Power will be in attendance to help answer questions. We also hope to have a representative from DEQ in attendance as well. UPDATE: 9/25/2017 – The City has received confirmation that both Capital Power and the Department of Environmental Quality will have representatives at the Mayor’s meeting on Thursday.
